Pilates

Pilates is a method of body conditioning that aims to develop the body and the mind alike of the individual. Joseph Hubertus Pilates began to develop it during the First World War and continued to enhance and refine it until his death in 1967. He named it ‘‘The Art of Contrology’’ because he believed that that every person to be healthy a strong mind was necessary in order to control their physical body . Pilates was ahead of his time as he had realized very early that as our society was progressing, it would rob us of our natural physical and mental vitality. Furthermore he observed that our compensatory efforts through hobbies, athletic leisure and recreation, are all too often performed in ways unbalanced and ineffective as to truly encourage good control of the body and balance of the spirit.

Toward this end, the Pilates method incorporates six key principles: Centering which refers to the focus to the center of the body, known as the ‘‘Powerhouse’’. This extends from the end of the ribcage to the line of the pelvic floor. Concentration which is necessary for our mind to guide our body. Control which refers to the fact that when you are concentrated enough so that each exercise is starting from the Powerhouse you will gain the control of the movements performed. Precision with which each exercise should be executed. Breath which refers to the rhythm of breathing in order to facilitate (or challenge) movement and for the purpose of obtaining optimal circulation of oxygenated blood to all tissues of the body and last but not least Flow which refers to the graceful and flowing succession of one exercise to another during a Pilates session. The Pilates Method first affects the position of the pelvis, which in turn results in postural changes to the spine and second, it works directly upon the musculoskeletal structure of the spine by strengthening, stretching and lengthening it. Our kinaesthisis, the ability to feel how we move is enhanced, making our bodies work in harmony with our spirit and this ability accompanies us in all aspects of our lives.

"I should be right. Never even an aspirin. Never had an injury. The whole country, the whole world should do my exercises. They would be happier."
